10 things Nepalese Student should know before going India

Every student dreams of an International Degree and a global career. With the rapid globalization, there has been a trend of studying abroad for international standard education among the students. Even our country Nepal can’t stay out of it. So for Nepalese students India has been proved a primary target and an educational hub through which they could easily fulfill the dream of international degree and global career. India stands among top countries that provide quality education at affordable price.

But there are lots of things to be considered while going India for further study. Through my few years of experiences, here are few things students should know before leaving to pursue Indian Higher Education which may facilitate their stay.

Nepalese students should know these things before going India

1. Language and the country

Language is obvious things you’ll need to be aware of before you go to any new places. Even there is a great diversity over languages in India, for Northern parts of India Hindi will work well but it will not work for Southern region. English is the second most spoken language in southern part.
So, having a good command on English and Hindi will help you to get communicate for first time. As you start living there you’ll get to know the local languages. And you can both get a book or surf through internet and learn social, geological, economical, historical and cultural aspects of India before leaving for India.

2. Subject study

First be clear about the subject you want to study and get some idea about its scope. Better you choose the subjects with global scope so that you don’t need to stay unproductive in any corner of the world. And your working space will be much wider.

3. Institutions

There are thousands of colleges, universities and deemed universities in India. So without going blindly through the advertisements of the institute, do a case study over the institute. Find out the grade, placement services, international collaborations, fame on the market, national and international ranking, location, faculties and researches, educational environments, etc. of the institution.

It will be better choosing a university’s own school rather than affiliated colleges. Ragging is the biggest problem in India so find out whether there are any anti-ragging cells or not.

4. Talk to the Alumni

Find alumni of the institution you are applying to. Talking to him/her will help you to know more about the prospect of your study in that institution. Through this you’ll find out more about the institution and also about the type of professionals produced by it. You’ll get a tentative idea on how easy it will be for you to compete in the market with that institutional brand.

5. Fee Structure and Scholarship

Find out the free structure and probable scholarship you could get with the merit you have and be ensured whether you are eligible to apply there. In India, there is a provision for partial fee waiver for SAARC countries so that it will be much economical for a Nepalese student to study.

If you are going through a consultant, finalize the deal of fee after having all knowledge and get a copy of it with you so that you can present it at the time when you are to be charged for extra headings.

6.Necessary Documents

As we have the open border system with India there is no need for us to get visa to go to India. But during the admission process some Institutions require passport, so better you get your passport. If not always have your Citizenship certificate (English translated), attested copies of your mark sheets, health certificate, copy of offer letter (if you are in scholarship) and proof of your identity while going to India for higher studies.

7. Local connection and accommodation

Don’t let the loneliness in a new place haunt you. So try to find out your relatives or kith and kin who you can visit during holidays. You may not always get college-hostel for accommodation so it’ll be easier for you to stay with them. Even if you are not interested for this, they could be the one who you can contact with in case of emergency. After you start living there grow your network so that the place will be no longer alien to you. Never forget to make friends.

8. Cultural Structures

We don’t have much cultural difference with India. But due to larger diversities and ethnicities in India, it may vary from place to place. So before you go there, learn about the lifestyle, religion, culture, heritages, social norms and values, etc. of the locality so that you can develop a sense of co-existence during your stay. It will help you more to cope with that locality.

9. Don’t rely to your consultancy for everything

We have a habit of depending upon our consultancy for doing every arrangement; from the selection of college to admission process. But we can’t rely on them for this. There are numbers of cases of thug and ill-informing, after all they all are there for business. So students should be aware of these things and should show keen interest during these processes. It will help the student to be independent from the beginning.

10. Connection with the embassy and the knowledge of national laws

We must never assume that there will be normal life in Indian societies. There are maximum numbers of clashes and riots happening there. So during these times for proper security, have a secured connection with Embassy of Nepal and get proper knowledge of the local laws and stick to them so that you don’t violate any of them. Be always on safe side.

So, I believe you should consider about these ten points before going to India. If you are one of the Nepalese students studying in India, then please do share what you think about it. And feel free to add more points. 🙂
